Celebrating our lives together in Christ |
As reported in
the newspapers of the day:
Church Property Purchase
Capt. Hyde has just sold to the trustees of Grace church the corner lot
on College avenue and Drew street — 94 x 220 feet — for $4,000.
Arrangements are being made to remove the old edifice to the lot and it
will be placed back from the avenue quite a distance, fronting on Drew
street. It is the intention to retain the avenue front for a new
edifice at some future time.
The location is an eligible one for the purpose. The church will have
valuable business property on the old site [corner of Washington and
Appleton Streets for sale, and can easily realize sufficient to remove
the church building, fit it up in good shape, and leave a handsome
surplus as the nucleus of a church building fund. Appleton

No
Services
Until the latter part of October, pending the removal and fixing up of
the Episcopal church, there will be no services. Rev. Mr. Vernor
expects to enjoy a few weeks vacation at Detroit during the interim. Appleton

The
Church Removal
In consequence of the width of the Episcopal Church, the removal has
not been as rapid as the contractor had hoped for, but ere this reaches
the Crescent readers, the
edifice will have reached its destination on
Drew street. Appleton Crecent,
September 15, 1883
Had Grace church been 2 feet wider it would have been impossible to
have moved it through the street. The building will be considerably
damaged by the time it reaches its future location. Appleton Post, September 20, 1883
Church
Matters
The Episcopal Church, after much
journeying and much winding about, has at last been safely deposited on
its foundation walls, a little the worse for wear but nevertheless in
pretty good shape. It is hoped to resume service in it by November 1st.
Since the church has been under motion Sunday School has been kept up
at Mrs. B.T. Rogers’ residence in the First ward. Appleton Crescent,

Church
Improvement
The improvement in the appearance of Grace Church is very marked
indeed. Since its removal to Drew street, a very fine stone foundation
has been built, upon which the church edifice now rests, the basement
is thoroughly drained by the sewer connection, the roof has been
re-shingled, the exterior painted,
the interior re-plastered and will be calsomined in tint, the windows
repaired. The building has been so thoroughly rejuvenated as to present
a creditable appearance, and when completed will be very comfortable.
It cannot be made ready for services under a couple of weeks yet.
The church is to be congratulated upon the improvement of location as
well as in the completeness, comfort, and convenience of the nearly
finished church. Appleton Crescent,

Grace
Church
The work on the interior of the church is so far completed that
services will be held Sunday morning and evening. The walls have been
replastered and calsomined in tint, the windows repaired. In removing
the building the stained glass windows were badly broken, and the glass
has not yet been received to replace it, although temporary repairs
sufficient to make it comfortable have been made, so that those
attending service on Sunday will be comfortable. Appleton Crescent,

At
Grace Church
Religious services appropriate to Thanksgiving day will be held at
Grace Church on Thursday morning next, at 10:30, and Rev. Mr. Vernor
will preach a sermon prepared for the day. Music suited to the day and
occasion will be rendered.
The seats are free to all, and the invitation to the service as well as
those of Sunday is made general and hearty. Appleton Crescent, November
24, 1883
